200 km2 of forest, about the size of the city of Osaka, are lost every day

Separator

By the end of this month, an area approximately the size of the Dominican Republic will have been deforested

Why do we destroy forests?

  • To create areas for industrial and subsistence farming
  • To make room for livestock farms
  • For urban development, to build roads and infrastructures
  • To obtain timber for construction, as fuel, for the production of paper, etc.

What are the effects of deforestation?

  • Global warming: reducing forests leads to lower CO2 absorption and increases the greenhouse effect
  • Climate change, even at the local level
  • Hydrogeological instability that causes soil erosion, floods and landslides
  • Desertification
  • Threats for the survival of animals and plants (loss of biodiversity)
  • The worsening of living conditions of local populations

How can we counteract deforestation?

  • Do not waste paper and wood-based products and help recycling as much as possible through waste sorting
  • Avoid buying food (for example those containing palm oil that has not been produced responsibly) and goods whose production causes deforestation, preferring instead products from sustainably managed forests, for example those with FSC certification
  • Eat less meat, to reduce deforestation caused by livestock breeding

About

The purpose of this project is to make users aware of environmental issues and in particular the effects of deforestation at a global level and its impact on the environment, and on how we can do our part in counteracting the phenomenon.

Disclaimer

The calculations of the rate of deforestation are based on FAO data on the average forest loss recorded in the period 2000-2010 (see data sources in the next section).
